As a wedding photographer I prefer this romantic time between the man and his beauty. And I'll tell you why......
This is only a superstition which many already know, this was meant for arranged marriages. The reason the groom isn't allowed to see the bride before the wedding was to ensure he wouldn't run away.... I'm sure most, if not all of you have met before the engagement took place!
So with that being said, the bride and groom get to have their own private, special time together before all the hustle and bustle really starts. They can concentrate on the now, and what is right in front of them, with no interruptions. The groom can admire his new bride to be and really take in her beauty (not that he won't during the ceremony or there after) But this is their moment, just of the two of them, distraction free.
With that being said... I have listed the 4 pros (my opinion) below, as well as the one con. This list should help you make that decision a little easier!
Pros of the reveal before the ceremony
1) Most formal photographs taken during a wedding take an average of a couple of hours (family, friends, bride and groom formals, and bridal party pictures) This will minimize the time between the ceremony and reception
2) This is time for just the bride and groom, distraction free. They can concentrate on just each other
3) You can do many different styles of reveals to bring some fun to the photos, and have the grooms anticipation rise as his leading lady approaches closer and closer (imagine how he feels)
- have him blind folded, once the bride approaches have her slowly take off the blind fold. Or if there are other family members involved in the reveal (mom, dad, sister) have them take the blind fold off
- Have the bride and groom on either side of a closed door, the bride can stand back a few steps to give the door room to fully open, and the groom can enter the room (this would be great if you have a second shoot attending your wedding. A photographer can be on either side, you will capture both faces)
- Have the grooms back facing the bride as she walks out, she can slowly touch him as she comes around to face him.
4) Seeing each other before the ceremony may calm your nerves and leave you feeling less anxious
The only con I came up with was...... Your mom may be mad at you for not doing the traditional don't see each other before the wedding ceremony, but after she sees the beauty in your wedding photos, her mind will be swayed and she will be glad you did it YOUR way.
If you have done a reveal prior to the ceremony or did the traditional ceremony, let us hear your story and why you made the decision you did! I will update my blog with your pros and cons for both the reveal or traditional ceremony.
